COMOP encompasses a large spectrum of physics, from cold atoms, colloids, and organic-inorganic hybrids, to devices build with complex heterostructures. The field covers a wide range of theoretical and experimental techniques, including powerful laser systems and advanced magnet technology, and is linked with high-tech facilities.

COMOP research in the Netherlands
COMOP focuses on fundamental research and pushes the limits in instrumentation and the realisation of proof-of-principle demonstrations of novel device concepts. From this solid scientific basis, technologies of major relevance for society are anticipated in the areas of information technology and energy, for example.

In the COMOP focus memorandum, the vision 'next-level, emergent functionalities through control of organisation' is described for the next ten years. A major development is foreseen in the control of emergent functionalities and material characteristics. This is a direct consequence of the high level of refinement, precision and reliability of the instruments currently available to scientific researchers.

Advisory committee Condensed matter and optical physics
An advisory committee has been appointed for Condensed matter and optical physics. This committee provides the Executive Board with solicited and unsolicited advice about proposals for new FOM programmes and helps to monitor the progress of current FOM programmes.

The Condensed matter and optical physics advisory committee members are:
- Prof.dr. M. Dijkstra (chair, UU)
- Prof.dr. D. Bonn (UvA)
- Prof.dr. J.-S. Caux (UvA)
- Dr. R.A. Duine (UU)
- Prof.dr. N.E. Hussey (RU)
- Dr.ir. S.J. van der Molen (LEI)
- Prof.dr. T.T.M. Palstra (RUG)
- Dr. H.G.C. Werij (TNO)
secretary: Ir. A.K. de Hoogh

The following research programmes fall under this subarea.
