Seventy-five women at Burgers' Zoo
Once every two years FOM organises a symposium for all women working in physics. On Friday 16 April 2010 the latest edition of this event took place at Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem.
Surrounded by zebras, giraffes and tropical birds, seventy-five women listened to presentations from Dr. Anna Maria Janner, Prof. Jennifer Herek and Prof. Cathy Fowley. The common theme was 'how to synchronise an appealing career in physics with the rest of life'. Four workshops addressed practical issues for physicists. One workshop asked: How can you get your paper published in Nature? Another considered how to deal with cultural differences at the workplace. At a third workshop participants could learn how to improve their presentation techniques, and the tips & tricks for fundraising offered at the fourth workshop were enthusiastically taken away.
The delegates keenly exchanged experiences during the closing dinner before bats accompanied them to the exit during the walk through the bush to the bus.
