Zernike Institute ranks ninth in the world
The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Groningen takes the ninth place in a ranking of the world's top institutions in materials science, published by the prestigious journal Times Higher Education. The institute focuses on functional materials with researchers from physics, chemistry and biology. Part of the research is financed by FOM.
The Times ranking is based on citation scores (rather than on subjective assessment as used in their ranking of universities). The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials takes the ninth place in this ranking, closely following MIT and ahead of such institutions as Princeton, Stanford, Cambridge and UCLA. It is the highest ranking European institution, and the only Dutch institute in the list of 20. On average, a paper published in the last ten years by Zernike researchers is cited over 20 times.
Previously this month, a publication from the NanoSci-ERA-project, authored by professor Maria Antonietta Loi van het Zernike Institute was published in the journal Advanced Materials. The article described research in which organic molecules were incorporated inside carbon nanotubes to make the nanotubes emitters of visible light. These materials could be used to make photonic devices.
The Dutch contribution to the European NanoSci-ERA-programme is financed by FOM and STW (with a special contribution from NWO). Also, the management of the Dutch projects lies with FOM and STW.
