Jaap Kistemaker 1917 - 2010
Professor Jaap Kistemaker, former director of AMOLF, has passed away on Friday, May 28, 2010 at the age of 93.
Jaap Kistemaker was the first director of the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam, which he led from 1949 until his retirement in 1982. In the 1950s he pioneered the development of uranium isotope separation in the Netherlands. After that he initiated a successful research program in atomic and molecular physics at AMOLF, always with possible applications in industry and society in mind.
Under his leadership the institute gained a strong international reputation. As a director, Jaap Kistemaker created a special research culture, which we still enjoy today. He was an inspiring teacher and supervised many researchers. We remember Jaap Kistemaker as an amicable colleague and a strong and dedicated leader that has inspired many.
