Research School Subatomic Physics receives NWO grant
The national Research School Subatomic Physics (OSAF) is one of the ten research schools in the Netherlands that has received a grant from the new NWO Graduate Programme. The NWO committee was full of praise for the 'impressive proposal' from OSAF. The grant is worth 800,000 euro and will be used for the appointment of four extra PhD students who will carry out their research within the school.
The research schools were evaluated according to the scientific quality (research programme, quality of researchers) and the quality of the education and supervision provided (educational programming, quality of supervisors and lecturers). The referees from NWO described OSAF's proposal as "an excellent proposal from a top institute", and stated that it was difficult to think of a better place for scientists at the start of their career.
Professor Nicolo de Groot, chair of OSAF, is extremely pleased with the outcome: "OSAF offers students the possibility to carry out top research in an international environment. With this recognition, OSAF can appoint four extra PhD students."
OSAF
OSAF is the Research School of the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (Nikhef), which is a partnership between the Foundation for Research on Fundamental Matter (FOM) and four universities: Radboud University Nijmegen, University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University
and VU University Amsterdam. Radboud University Nijmegen is the official secretary for OSAF.
NWO Graduate Programme
NWO developed the new Graduate Programme at the request of the Ministry for Education, Culture and Science with the aim of creating an excellent education and research environment for highly talented young researchers. In the second round of the Graduate Programme, 10 of the 29 proposals submitted were ultimately funded after a meticulous selection procedure.
