Record number of participants expected at Physics@FOM Veldhoven
The counter for Physics@FOM Veldhoven has registered 1673 participants for this year. That is a new record for FOM's annual congress that will be held in Veldhoven next Tuesday and Wednesday. The physicists will take part in 12 focus sessions and 18 parallel sessions (164 lectures). On top of that there is a network lunch for industry and scientists and 379 posters will be presented. On the evening before the congress four master classes will be held for a select group of PhDs.
The programme
On Tuesday morning, 18 January, John Pendry will kick off the event with a lecture about the wonderful world of metamaterials: 'Invisible cloaks & a perfect lens'. Nobel Prize winner Andre Geim will talk on Tuesday evening about his graphene research, sticky tape and levitating frogs. Prior to his lecture, state secretary Halbe Zijlstra will present the FOM Valorisation Prize 2010 to Fred Bijkerk and the FOM Valorisation Chapter Prize and the FOM Physics Thesis Prize 2010 to Ewold Verhagen. On Wednesday 19 January, the FOM prize winners will present their prize-winning research in a separate session. David Quéré will conclude the congress on Wednesday with a lecture about how we can put the characteristics of water to good use.
