LNVH anniversary prize for Nynke Dekker
FOM workgroup leader Prof.dr. Nynke Dekker was awarded the LNVH anniversary prize on 5 September. Four young excellent female scientists have received the prize from the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNHV) on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. The prize, a sum of 5000 euros and a certificate - will be presented during the LNVH anniversary celebrations on 6 October 2011 at the Central Museum in Utrecht.
Nynke Dekker (1971) is professor of biophysics at Delft University of Technology and one of the leading researchers in the Netherlands at the boundaries of physics, biology and nanoscience. Her research into the interaction between DNA and RNA proteins forms the basis of future medical applications. Her group recently developed magnetic tweezers that have enabled a new generation of measurements about the functioning of protein motors. Within and beyond her own university, Nynke Dekker fulfils an exemplary role as an organiser and figurehead of science. On 1 January 2012 she will become the first female member of the Executive Board of the FOM Foundation. She has previously received a Vidi and a Vici grant from NWO.
LNVH anniversary prize
With the LNVH anniversary prize, LNVH hopes to gain greater recognition for the wealth of female scientific talent in the Netherlands. LNVH Chair Els Goulmy: 'After all, why shouldn't female talent be spotted and optimally used and supported?' The four women who have received the LNVH anniversary prize have each built up a formidable reputation at a young age. Further information can be found in the NWO press release (only in Dutch).
