15 new research projects to start
FOM awards 6.4 million euros to highly promising physics
research
The FOM-Projectruimte is one of the grant instruments the FOM Foundation has to fund physics research. On 7 June 2011, the Executive Board had already decided to award funding to 2 proposals within the spring round of the FOM-Projectruimte and this week a further 13 proposals were awarded funding. This means that in the spring round of the FOM-Projectruimte 15 proposals have been awarded funding totalling 6.4 million euros.
The new rules concerning preferential treatment for new permanent members of staff and tenure-track employees were applied for the first time in this round. A total of 1.2 million euros was reserved for the funding of proposals meriting preferential treatment and 3 proposals were awarded accordingly.
The FOM-Projectruimte funds small-scale projects for fundamental research in physics that have an innovative character and a demonstrable scientific, industrial or societal urgency. The maximum funding that can be applied for is 400,000 euros. Proposals from subjects bordering physics are also eligible for this grant, as long as the research makes a sufficient contribution to physics. If a significant investment component is present or if a project is collaborative in nature then the amount awarded can be increased to a maximum of 550,000 euros. The Projectruimte has two deadlines per year. The deadline for the autumn round is 26 October 2011.
The complete list of proposals awarded funding can be found on our website.
