Jorik van de Groep wins Shell Bachelor Master Prize
One of the three Shell Bachelor Master Prizes from the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities has been awarded to Jorik van de Groep. He wins his prize worth 2000 euros for his final project dissertation entitled 'Light trapping in thin silicon waveguides by plasmon-mediated mode coupling'.
Van de Groep carried out his final project in the research group of Prof. Albert Polman at the FOM Institute AMOLF. His research focussed on the development of efficient solar cells and he investigated the possibilities for capturing light in thin and flexible solar panels with the aid of nanoparticles. He graduated cum laude last August from Utrecht University.
The Shell prizes are awarded to the best physics students and are based on the overall study result and the innovative character and quality of the final project. The prizes were presented on 23 November by Dr Alexander Rinnooij Kan, chair of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities. The Shell Bachelor Master Prizes are made available by Shell, the Lorentz Fund and the Platform Mathematics Netherlands.
