Executive Board of FOM
The Executive Board of the FOM Foundation has five members. Earlier this year it had already been decided that with effect from 1 January 2012 Prof. N.H. (Nynke) Dekker would fill the vacancy that arises with the retirement from the board of vice-chair Prof. Carlo Beenakker (who therefore retires from the Governing Board of FOM as well). The December issue of FOM expres contains a farewell interview with Carlo Beenakker.

In the board meeting is was decided that Executive Board member Prof. D. (Detlef) Lohse will become vice-chair of the Governing Board and Executive Board of FOM with effect from 1 January 2012.

During the course of 2012 Dr. Th.J.H. (Dirk) Smit (per 1 March 2012) and Prof. Th.H.M. (Theo) Rasing (per 1 December 2012) will complete their 4-year terms of office. Both board members have stated their willingness to be reappointed for a second term of office and during the board meeting their reappointment to the Executive Board of FOM was officially confirmed.

FOM thanks the retiring board members for their services rendered.

FOM in brief
The Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) facilitates fundamental physics research in the Netherlands. FOM's activities benefit society in general and higher education and industry in particular. About 1040 people are employed by FOM: almost 90 tenured scientific members of staff, 160 postdocs, 430 PhDs and 360 technicians and support staff. The research takes place at three institutes and at 182 university workgroups spread across 11 Dutch universities. FOM employees produce about 60 PhD theses and 1100 scientific articles per year.

The FOM Foundation spends 91.8 million euros on investments in FOM activities and the exploitation of these. Most of FOM’s funding comes from the Division for Physics of NWO and the Governing Board of NWO. Additional funding is obtained from the European Union, the Dutch government and partnerships between universities and industry. The FOM Foundation was set up in 1946 and is part of NWO.
