LHC detector upgrade and KM3Net in National Roadmap
A total of 27 large research projects have gained a place in the new National Roadmap for large-scale research facilities. The two proposals submitted by Nikhef researchers, 'Dutch contributions to the detector upgrades of the Large Hadron Collider experiments at CERN' and 'KM3NeT: the next generation neutrino telescope', have both been included in the roadmap. That was announced on Friday 2 March by the Ministry for Education, Culture and Science and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Only the very best projects with the greatest potential for science could be selected.
The Roadmap is based on an advisory report compiled by the Meijer Committee on behalf of NWO. The committee was very impressed with the proposals Nikhef submitted and in particular by the leadership and crucial coordinating role that Nikhef fulfils in the Dutch contribution to these projects: "The position of the Netherlands in this field is strong, despite the high level of competition. Thanks to Nikhef, the participation in the project is well organised." (From the committee's response to the LHC proposal).
"The Committee considers that the institutes involved in KM3Net, especially Nikhef, have demonstrated leadership in both the precursor experiment ANTARES and in the design and development of KM3NeT." (From the committee's response to the KM3NeT proposal).
