ERC Starting Grants also go to Ronald Hanson and Val Zwiller
Besides FOM workgroup leader Prof.dr. Maria Antonietta Loi and Dr. Meike Stöhr, FOM workgroup leader Dr. Ronald Hanson and Dr. Val Zwiller have also received an ERC Starting Grant. The ERC grants are intended for setting up or further strengthening excellent research teams. FOM researchers Hanson and Zwiller both work at Delft University of Technology. With the grant of 1.5 million euros Hanson will try to get full control over quantum mechanical particles. In recent years researchers have managed to manipulate the angular momentum (spin) of individual electrons and atomic nuclei in diamond. Hanson now wants to make the ultimate step: guiding spins with quantum feedback. In addition to new fundamental insights, the research must lead to a quantum feedback error correction in a small quantum computer. The ERC grant will enable Zwiller to develop nanodevices for quantum optics. This will make functionalities such as quantum memory, scalable sources for non-distinguishable photons and, in the distant future, quantum signal amplifiers, possible.
