Three ERC Starting Grants for biophysics
FOM board member professor Nynke Dekker and her colleagues Dr. Chirlmin Joo and Dr. Francesco Pedaci have received an ERC Starting Grant.
Dekker will do research into the information processing process in our genes during cell division. Most of the information in our genes must be continually read out and processed. This is done by proteins, as individual molecules or as part of large protein complexes. The most fundamental question is: how can the information processing process take place successfully? Dekker will use her ERC Starting Grant to study the dynamics of this process during DNA transcription and DNA replication in greater detail. More specifically she wants to investigate what causes these processes to stop at a given moment. Mechanical limitations in the DNA could be responsible for this.
