Considerable interest in first Call Top Sector High Tech Systems and Materials
The call that the top sector High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) opened earlier this year on 1 June attracted 74 proposals with a total requested budget of 36.4 million euros. That amount includes pledges from participating companies totalling 14.3 million euros (7.8 million euros in cash and 6.5 million euros in kind). As a budget of 11.9 million euros has been made available for the call by the FOM Foundation, Technology Foundation STW, NWO and ZonMw then it is expected that about half of the proposals can be awarded funding. The selection procedure should be completed before Christmas and then it should be known which projects have been awarded funding.
The top sector HTSM is the first to have realised a call for proposals. The projects, with a university researcher as the main applicant, were not allowed to exceed 500,000 euros and including co-funding from no more than 1 million euros. The compulsory co-funding by companies in the projects requesting funding is considerable and covers at least 35% of the total project costs. From this amount at least 20% of the total project costs must be contributed in cash and in addition to this in-kind contributions could be made to reach the required minimum of 35% of the total project costs.
The available budget of 11.9 million euros comes from Technology Foundation STW (5 million euros), the Governing Board of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO - also 5 million euros), the FOM Foundation (1 million euros) and ZonMw (financier of health research and healthcare innovation – 0.9 million euros). All of the projects requesting funding must fall within one of the 15 HTSM roadmaps.

The majority of proposals have come from researchers at the technical universities: Delft University of Technology 22, Eindhoven University of Technology 18 and University of Twente 16. The other proposals have come from researchers at the VU University Amsterdam, Leiden University, Utrecht University, Maastricht University, Radboud University Nijmegen, the University of Groningen, CWI in Amsterdam and the university hospitals AMC, VUMC, LUMC and UMCU.
Technology Foundation STW is organising the assessment of all proposals by independent experts. The decision about which projects will be awarded funding is planned for the week before Christmas.
