The High Field Magnetic Laboratory (HFML) in Nijmegen - a collaboration between Radboud University Nijmegen and the FOM Foundation - is a leading international research facility where dozens of researchers from many countries come each year to do experiments.

Just like the HFML, the HZDR in Dresden is also a leading high magnetic field lab. "The two institutes complement each other superbly," says Prof.dr. Jan Kees Maan, director of the HFML in Nijmegen. "Whereas we do research into continuous fields, Dresden is specialised in short pulsed fields with a higher maxima." Both laboratories possess a unique combination of high fields with infrared free electron lasers (ELBE in Dresden and FELIX in Nijmegen). With the help of such very intense radiation, an entirely new area of magnetic field research can be opened up.

Scientists from both labs have worked together for many years. The measurement time for guest researchers is awarded by means of a joint procedure and workshops and schools are organised for young researchers. Regular consultations are also held and there are several collaborative projects. The parties have now signed for an even more intensive collaboration, with a greater exchange of expertise and technological knowledge and more collaboration in new projects. "We look forward to a fruitful cooperation with Radboud University Nijmegen and the FOM Foundation," says HZDR's scientific director Prof.dr. Roland Sauerbrey.
