Davide Iannuzzi and Erwin Peterman appointed as professors
FOM workgroup leaders Davide Iannuzzi and Erwin Peterman have been appointed as professors at VU University Amsterdam with effect from 1 January 2013 under the University Research Chair programme. Through this programme VU recognises outstanding scientists who are considered to be the future leaders in their discipline and have been selected due to their excellence and their potential for the future. Together with three other scientists Iannuzzi and Peterman are the first five University Research Chair professors. The URC professors are appointed for a period of five years and after that the faculties offer them a tenured appointment as a professor.
Davide Iannuzzi
Iannuzzi is FOM workgroup leader and associate professor at VU University Amsterdam. He received an ERC Starting Grant in 2007 and an ERC Proof of Concept in 2011. He has since set up his own company Optics11. This company develops technology for very small optomechanical sensors. After five years of research this 'fibertop' technology is now ready to be marketed. In April 2011, FOM awarded a valorisation grant to Iannuzzi to support the development of a read-out system for a so-called 'ferrule top' sensor. With such special valorisation projects, FOM encourages the valorisation of knowledge and scientific research within the university workgroups it funds.
Erwin Peterman
Peterman investigates the physics of life at the molecular scale. In 2010, he received a Vici grant from NWO for his research. In his research he makes use of advanced techniques such as fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy and so-called ‘optical tweezers’. In addition to this he is programme leader of the Vrije FOM-programma 'Barriers in the brain: the molecular physics of learning and memory' that started early this year. At FOM, Peterman is also a member of the Programme Committee 2012 of the Dutch Meeting on Molecular and Cellular Biophysics that took place on 1 and 2 October in Veldhoven.
