SolMateS sells Pulsed Laser Deposition system to Bosch
In February, the Twente-based company SolMateS received an order from the Bosch Groep for the supply of the PiezoFlare 1200, a machine based on pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The patented production machine, which will be delivered in the summer, can produce computer chips with movable layers. This gives the chips more functionalities and is a revolution in the chip industry. FOM research led to the founding of SolMateS in 2006 and FOM also contributed to the company's development with a start-up loan.
Second order
This is the second order for the PiezoFlare 1200. In January 2013, SolMateS delivered a machine to SINTEF in Norway. That machine will be used for the application of piezoelectric layers for the development and pre-production of a new generation of computer chip applications. "We are pleased with this second sale in such a short space of time," says SolMateS’ CEO Arjen Janssens, "especially as this order comes from a world leading MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) manufacturer. It demonstrates the industrial interest for our deposition technology."
About the PiezoFlare 1200
The PiezoFlare 1200 is a breakthrough in manufacturing technology, a novel technique to physically deposit different composite materials. It is a deposition system for thin films on 100, 150 or 200 mm wafers, based on pulsed laser deposition. The technology uses a laser to create a plasma of the material to be deposited. This enables industrial quality deposition of new generation materials. The automated tool offers high yield, customised deposition of various More than Moore materials. This PLD technology is regarded as the first major step in MEMS technology since the introduction of deep-reactive ion etching and backside alignment. The deposition technology of the PiezoFlare 1200 has been developed at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Twente in Enschede. The research groups of FOM workgroup leaders professor Dave Blank and professor Guus Rijnders work with this same technology at a laboratory scale.
About SolMateS
SolMateS is a rapidly growing and ambitious company with 20 staff and is located at the Science Park Twente in Enschede. As a spin-off of the MESA+ Institute of Nanotechnology, SolMateS has developed pulsed laser deposition from lab scale to production level. SolMateS has already won several technology and business awards since its launch in 2006. For further information visit SolMateS' website at www.solmates.nl.
