FOM awards 1.9 million euros to highly promising physics research in the Projectruimte
On 17 December 2013 the Executive Board of FOM decided to award five proposals in the FOM-Projectruimte a total of 1.9 million euros. The Projectruimte is just one of the funding instruments that the FOM Foundation has to fund the realisation of physics research. The Projectruimte makes it possible to carry out small-scale fundamental research projects in physics with an innovative character and a demonstrable scientific, industrial or societal urgency.
Research proposals awarded funding
The following research proposals were awarded funding. On the Projectruimte page you can find further information and a summary.
- Engineering quantum magnetism and superconductivity in spin-orbit Mott insulators
Dr. A. Caviglia (Delft University of Technology); - Theory of fermion-parity switches in superconductors
Prof. C.W.J. Beenakker (Leiden University); - CP violation in the Higgs sector
Dr. P. Ferrari (FOM institute Nikhef); - Black hole dynamics in asymptotically safe quantum gravity
Dr. F.S. Saueressig (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen); - Beyond optical microscopy: Phase-contrast imaging of cells with a table-top soft-X-ray Microscope
Dr. S. Witte (VU University Amsterdam).
Continuous submission
Since 1 May 2013, the FOM-Projectruimte no longer has deadlines and researchers can submit proposals continuously. The proposals are treated in order of arrival in batches of 15 to 25. All proposals will be submitted to referees and the jury will reach the final assessment in a single assessment round. This is the first funding round that has taken place since the continuous submission policy came into effect. Proposals from disciplines bordering physics are also eligible for funding from the FOM-Projectruimte, as long as the research makes a sufficient contribution to physics.
New chances in 2014
The Projectruimte 2014 Manual is available on the FOM website. This can be used as a guideline for the submission of research proposals in 2014. About 7 million euros of funding is available for the Projectruimte in 2014. A further 3 million euros of funding is available within the framework of the Sector Plan Physics and Chemistry.
