On Wednesday 29 January 2014, State Secretary for Education, Culture and Science, Sander Dekker, made a work visit to CERN in Geneva. The state secretary and his delegation were given a day-long tour of CERN including a unique opportunity to view the impressive LHC experiments and the LHC tunnel.
The Dutch delegation was welcomed at the laboratory by CERN director-general professor Rolf Heuer. Nikhef director professor Frank Linde and FOM workgroup leader and Radboud University Nijmegen professor Sijbrand de Jong (also the Netherlands' scientific representative on the CERN Council). They accompanied the state secretary during his work visit and, together with other scientists, ranging from students to professors, enthusiastically informed him about CERN's research.
Sander Dekker was impressed by the quest for the smallest particles and shared his impressions on Twitter with his followers. During the visit he said he was proud of what CERN has achieved and of the role that the Netherlands and Dutch researchers have played in this.
