Project title Organic solar cells: high-k for high efficiency
Applicant(s) Prof.dr. J.C. Hummelen
Abstract Organic solar cells offer many advantages over their silicon counterparts: they can be made using very low cost printing techniques and owing to the extraordinary light absorption capability of the polymers the active layer is extremely thin reducing materials cost. However, it has always been assumed that they are necessarily less efficient than inorganic solar cells. In my recent work, I have shown that this is not true: Organic solar cells can be as efficient as inorganic ones. The key is reducing recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes by using materials with a high dielectric constant (high-k). The proposed work will identify the best way of using high-k materials in organic solar cells by using a state-of-the-art device simulation.
