Project number 12CSER086
Project title Optimal offshore wind farms (OptiWind)
Applicant(s) Dr. M.E. Hochstenbach, Dr.ir. J.H.M. ten Thije Boonkkamp
Abstract Offshore wind energy is indispensable to meet the sustainable energy goals set for 2020 in het Nationaal Duurzame Energie ActiePlan. The Innovation Contract Wind op Zee addresses these goals, and so do we by directing the re- search proposed here to the Innovation Contract, particularly to its objective ‘Uitwerken van windparkfilosofie, voor maximale opbrengst en betrouwbaarheid’.
Recently, significant progress has been made in computational methods for simulating the aerodynamics of off- shore wind farms, and likewise in algorithms for optimizing aerodynamic shapes of airfoils and wings. The time is perfectly right now to combine experts and algorithms, to develop a design algorithm for optimal wind farms. In the project proposed here, the experts are applied mathematicians and wind-energy engineers, and the algorithms are state-of-the-art computational methods for solving the Navier-Stokes equations for turbulent wind-farm-wake flow and inverse problems.
Novel numerical nonlinear algebra algorithms will be developed, for the direct benefit of wind-farm optimization.
