Project title Reliability and robustness of power grids with uncertain generation
Applicant(s) Dr. D.T. Crommelin, Prof.dr. A.P. Zwart
Abstract Reliability and robustness are essential features in the design, control and maintenance of power grids with wind and solar energy production. To this end, stringent demands are imposed on system reliability (e.g. max 2.25 minutes of power interruption per year). However, wind and solar generation are dependent on meteorological conditions and therefore inherently uncertain, leaving the (small) possibility of large fluctuations that lead to failure of power grids. Such fluctuations can be regarded as rare events.
The goal of this proposal is to develop sophisticated rare event simulation techniques that accurately predict the probability of network failures for a given system design, and also where and how it fails. The team will bring together expertise from atmospheric sciences and stochastic network modeling.
