Abstract | Since most of the easy hydrocarbon reservoirs have been found, a step change in accurate sub-surface imaging for hydrocarbon exploration and production is crucial. Current compute power allows for the use of the full constant-density acoustic wave equation for seismic imaging and processing and its use is spreading steadily among oil companies and the service industry. The next challenge is an increase of accuracy by replacement of the acoustic wave propagator by an elastic one. The objective is the design of an algorithm for elastic wave propagation that has the same financial compute cost by the end of the project as your typical acoustic code today. The approach will be based on a novel finite-element method with explicit time stepping. |
