Project title PoroFlow: non-equilibrium models for flow in heterogeneous porous media
Applicant(s) Prof.dr. I.S. Pop, Prof.dr.ir. J. van Duijn, Prof.dr.ir. B, Koren
Abstract The subsurface is of utmost societal importance: it is one of the major energy and water sources, and provides temporary and long-term energy and CO2 storage. An optimal exploitation of the subsurface requires continuous efforts for a proper understanding of the various processes in it.
This project addresses issues related to the mathematical modelling, numerical simulation and upscaling of two-phase flow in the subsurface. The main focus is on non-equilibrium models in heterogeneous and fractured systems, where dynamic effects are included in the difference between the two phase pressures. The model concepts, methodology and the simulation tools developed in this project, matrix-fracture or rock-rock connectivity, upscaling and numerical schemes, are directly applicable to processes of societal relevance: enhanced oil recovery, CO2 storage in geological reservoir, or geothermal systems.
