Royal honours for physics
On Friday 24 April 2015 a total of 2837 royal honours were awarded of which 12 knighthoods in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. Three of the knighthoods are for researchers involved in physics: FOM workgroup leader Carlo Beenakker, FOM workgroup leader Sijbrand de Jong and professor of inorganic chemistry Bert Weckhuysen. Weckhuysen received a Gravitation grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) in December 2013 for a proposal in the physics domain.
The honour in the Order of the Netherlands Lion is awarded for services in the area of science and the arts.
Carlo Beenakker
FOM workgroup leader Carlo Beenakker is internationally recognised as a prominent scientist in theoretical physics. His work is in the area of condensed matter and solid-state physics. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the author of more than 300 scientific publications.
Sijbrand de Jong
FOM workgroup leader Sijbrand de Jong is a renowned physicist in the area of elementary particle physics. He was the first director of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP) of Radboud University Nijmegen. De Jong was amongst other things involved in the discovery of the Higgs boson.
Bert Weckhuysen
Weckhuysen belongs to the international top of his discipline, inorganic chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. He is committed to the use of his research for a sustainable society. In addition he contributes at a high level to the innovation and research strategy of Dutch chemistry. Weckhuysen has been a professor at Utrecht University since 2000. He has received many awards including the NWO Spinoza Prize.
