Physics with Industry is a tried and successful concept. The workshop offers companies a unique chance to gather new insights, to find solutions to their existing problems, to enlarge their academic network, and to come into contact with young researchers. The workshop will be held from 23 to 27 November 2015, and is organised by FOM, Technology Foundation STW and the Lorentz Center.

Why should you participate?
During the workshop week the participants will focus on problems from five different companies. Physicists from different disciplines will use their academic knowledge to realise surprising solutions for the issues. While doing this, they will become thoroughly acquainted with the companies, and the companies with them. Therefore the workshop will not only provide interesting solutions for each industrial problem, but the companies concerned will also come into contact with potential employees.

The workshop Physics with Industry was first held in 2010. Since then various large and small companies have participated. In past years, the workshops have led to solutions for problems but also to new collaborative projects, patent applications and jobs for the participating researchers. A few quotes from industry participants:

Rene Bos - Shell: "The focus on solving the problem was impressive."
Radu Surdeanu - NXP: "The team's diverse approaches to solving the problem led to two viable solutions and one of those even resulted in a joint patent application."
Paul Borm, Nano4Imaging (start up): "With a commercial research agency we could probably have achieved the same but I could not have afforded that in this phase."
Theo van der Leij – Pamgene: "A good and valuable contact was initiated with a university expert group that we are still collaborating with."
Sjoerd van Driesten - Avery Denniso: "One of the findings resulted in us terminating a development pathway that we were previously pursuing."

Selection of the problems
A programme committee will select the most suitable problems from all of the submissions. It will use the following criteria:

  1. Is it an urgent problem?
  2. Is it a scientifically challenging problem with a relevant physics question?
  3. Can a solution or a route to a solution be achieved within one week?
  4. Will the company provide enough input during the workshop to realise applicable results?

The organisation tries to achieve a mix of contributions from large companies and SMEs.
