FOM result on optical fiber properties chosen as image of the week by the OSA
A movie with data from a recent publication from FOM postdoc Lyuba Amitonova and her colleagues in the research group Complex Photonic Systems (COPS) at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente, was chosen by the OSA Publishing group as 'image of the week'. The image was also announced on the homepage of OSA Publishing and can now been seen on the website of the University of Twente.
The movie shows the rotation of the speckle-like pattern behind a multimode fiber if a single illumination spot on the input is rotated. Obviously the pattern stays more or less invariant. This useful effect was recognized by the researchers as a new kind of memory effect. It can be exploited for non-invasive imaging or ultrafast high-resolution scanning through a multimode fiber. The results have been published on 28 July 2015 in the journal 'Optics Express’.
The research was funded by FOM, the University of Twente and Technology Foundation STW (through NWOnano and the STW Demonstrator programme).
