FOM Institutes open their doors during the Weekend of Science
On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, everybody is welcome to come take a look at companies, institutes, universities, institutions and museums, and experience live science and technology during the 'Weekend of Science'. The four FOM Institutes will also open their doors to the public. It is a superb opportunity to take a look behind-the-scenes of scientific research. The Institutes Nikhef, AMOLF and ARCNL are taking part in the Open Day of the Amsterdam Science Park on Saturday 3 October, during which the theme will be light. FOM institute DIFFER will welcome visitors on Sunday 4 October. Everyone, both young and old, is warmly invited to take a look at the institutes, to talk with scientists and technicians or to take part in one of the many lectures, workshops, guided tours and demonstrations. Admission to all institutes is free of charge.
Open day FOM Institutes Nikhef, AMOLF and ARCNL in Amsterdam
The Open Day of these three FOM Institutes is on Saturday 3 October 2015 from 12.00 to 17.00 hours. Several highlights from the programme: have your photo taken with a cosmic particle (spark chamber), Atlas: the quest for the Higgs particle, make your own code breaker and decode the secret message (ages 7+), lectures about neutrino research, 100 years of the general theory of relativity, supermicroscopes, unravelling the rainbow, virtual landscape and solar energy techniques, building a solar cell, launching a rocket, how is a computer chip made and a mini-lecture about microscopes without lenses.
Theatre Lecture Albert Polman
A special highlight during the day at Amsterdam Science Park is the theatre lecture of Albert Polman (FOM Institute AMOLF) about solar energy and light management: The sun shines for free. The lecture starts at 15.00 hours, in the lecture theatre WCW congress centre, Science Park 125, Amsterdam. Admission is free.

Open day FOM Institute DIFFER in Eindhoven
The Open Day at FOM Institute DIFFER in Eindhoven will take place on Sunday 4 October 2015. The Open Day – accessible to the young and old – is all about discovering the energy of the future: doing experiments during a voyage of discovery, having a look at experiments that are hotter than the sun, talk together with science journalist Diederik Jekel with scientists in everyday Dutch about why they do research into the energy of the future. Everybody who is interested in fun experiments and the energy of the future is welcome in the new and sustainable laboratory building between 13.00 and 17.00 hours at the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology. Come look, listen, question, participate and be amazed.
Several highlights from the programme: puzzle trail for children through the building, discovering research setups, talking with researchers about the energy of the future, 932 solar cells, levitating on a magnet, Fusion Road Show, the fine mechanics workshop, talks of 15 minutes in everyday Dutch by enthusiastic researchers (what to research and why?) and much more.
Ask scientists your questions about energy together with Diederik Jekel
Bring your questions along and ask these live to the researchers. Science journalist Diederik Jekel will be there to help you! What is the best alternative for fossil fuel, when will nuclear fusion become a reality, will we have battery-powered planes, will we soon be able to store our own energy in the cellar? The fact people in the Netherlands are asking themselves such questions became clear when the Dutch Science Agenda invited people to submit questions. They received hundreds of questions about energy. Would you like to finally get some answers? And be able to quiz the researchers further? The institute for energy DIFFER offers you the chance to do just that during its open day on 4 October, between 14.00 and 15.00 hours, at a public Q&A session about the energy of the future. For all of your questions, also those you will think of on the day itself, even when they have nothing to do with energy.
