Energy transition
The worldwide transition to a sustainable, clean, reliable and affordable energy system is a complex issue with technological, economic and social aspects. The theme 'Energy Transition' offers challenges for many different disciplines:

  • How can the conversion, transport, storage, saving and use of energy be improved?
  • What contribution can be made through the integration of energy systems?
  • How can ICT and Big Data be used for the intelligent and interactive energy system of the future and how will we deal with privacy issues?
  • Which financial and economic aspects play a role in the Energy Transition and what opportunities do new business models and consumers who become producers offer, for example?
  • What legal aspects of the energy market will change with this transition and how can legislation respond to this?
  • Which societal changes could take place and is there public support for these?
  • What is the effect of the Energy Transition on the products, buildings, towns and landscapes in our living environment?
  • How can the energy transition make as large a contribution as possible to reducing the CO2 emissions and encouraging the use of sustainable raw materials?

Dutch National Research Agenda route Energy Transition
The national energy research domain has taken the initiative to publish an elaborated route Energy Transition for this multidisciplinary theme 'Energy Transition' on 1 June 2016. The pathway to realising the content for the Energy Transition route will be supervised by Wim Sinke (ECN, University of Amsterdam, AMOLF, chair), Richard van de Sanden (DIFFER, Eindhoven University of Technology) and Kornelis Blok (Delft University of Technology, Ecofys). An extensive description of the process for the Dutch National Research Agenda route Energy Transition can be found here and this also describes what has been prepared so far.

Workshops
On Tuesday 5 April the first workshop took place in which, with a sounding board group of 20 people from all disciplines involved, a framework for the route description was compiled with attention for both the short term and the long term.

On Tuesday 26 April the second workshop will be held at the Jaarbeurs Utrecht. During this workshop 150 people (divided over a morning and an afternoon session) will assess, and where necessary supplement, the framework proposed by the sounding board group on 5 April in order to provide a complete overview of the broad challenges we now face. In addition these challenges will be further specified so that opportunities for innovative research with impact in the Netherlands can be identified.

Registration workshop
If you are interested in taking part in the workshop on 26 April then please contact Erik Langereis.

About the Dutch National Research Agenda
In November 2014 the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science published the Vision on Science 2025; choices for the future, which contained a sketch of the desired future of science in the Netherlands. In the Vision on Science it is stated that even more so than in the past, science must focus on major societal issues; collaboration between public organisations, companies and scientific institutions is a vital for the circulation of knowledge. The joint formulation of the Dutch National Research Agenda must make an important contribution to that exchange of knowledge.
