NWO tries to offer all talented researchers the opportunity to excel. To improve the gender balance among its own research personnel, NWO decided in 2015 to establish a tenure-track programme for female researchers at NWO institutes, Women In Science Excel (WISE). This programme seeks to recruit and facilitate the promotion of female talent, by offering them the possibility to develop an own research group or to continue such a research group at one of the NWO institutes.
The WISE programme will provide 20 tenure-track positions over a total of five funding rounds. With a tenure-track appointment, researchers are given the opportunity to demonstrate within a certain period of time that they are good enough to be given a tenured appointment at a university or research institute. Last year NWO awarded the first - four - researchers a WISE grant.

NWO received 63 applications for this year's WISE funding round. A broadly composed international assessment committee, chaired by professor Vinod Subramaniam (VU Amsterdam), advised awarding a WISE position to three candidates. The NWO executive board accepted this advice and made the funding available so that ARCNL, AMOLF and SRON can appoint the candidates.

Dr. Ganzinger comes from the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich. At AMOLF she will use biophysical and system biology techniques to study the physics principles of complex information transfer and processing in the immune system.
Dr. Juschkin is currently an assistant professor at RWTH Aachen University and group leader at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. At ARCNL she will carry out research that will contribute to new lithographic techniques that will be used for the production of computer chips. She will focus on the production of extreme ultraviolet light, the introduction of holographic masks, and measurements that are extremely sensitive to types of atoms.
Dr. Simionescu is currently employed at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). She investigates  the evolution of the universe. At SRON she wants to use observations of cosmic x-rays to determine how the universe converts gas into stars and how the stars produce and disperse the chemical elements needed for the existence of life.

About NWO
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research ensures quality and innovation in science and facilitates the impact of this on society. NWO funds scientific research at Dutch knowledge institutions on the basis of quality and independent assessment and selection procedures. NWO manages nine national research institutes via its institutes organisation NWO-I: AMOLF, ARCNL, ASTRON, CWI, DIFFER, Nikhef, NIOZ, NSCR and SRON. NWO institutes consolidate strengths around a certain research question and connect Dutch science with the international scientific community.

About ARCNL
ARCNL was established in January 2014 and forms a unique public-private partnership between NWO, the University of Amsterdam, VU Amsterdam, and ASML, world market leader in the production of semiconductor equipment. ARCNL carries out high-level fundamental scientific research that is relevant to nanolithography.

About AMOLF
AMOLF is one of the research institutes of NWO. AMOLF initiates and performs leading fundamental research into the physics of natural and non-natural complex matter, and the creation of new functional materials in collaboration with Dutch universities and industry.

About SRON
SRON is one of the NWO institutes. SRON is the Dutch expertise institute for scientific space research. The institute carries out astrophysical, earth-oriented and exoplanet research. For this SRON develops groundbreaking technology and advanced space instruments.
