Gijs Nelemans professor of Gravitational wave astrophysics
Gijs Nelemans has been appointed chair of the Astrophysics department and Professor of Gravitational wave astrophysics at the Radboud University Faculty of Science with effect of Februari 2017.
Nelemans was involved in the measurement of the first gravitational wave from the merger of two black holes in 2015. He was one of two coordinating editors of the article on the astrophysical implications of measurement. The higher than expected mass of the two black holes already has interesting consequences for our understanding of the formation of black holes.
Gijs Nelemans (Paramaribo, 1971) obtained his PhD in 2001 (University of Amsterdam) on research into white dwarfs, black holes and neutron stars in close binary stars, two stars that revolve around each other. He joined the Nijmegen astrophysics group in 2004. Since 2011 he has been visiting professor at the University of Leuven.
