Press
On 17 and 18 January 2012 FOM is organising the sixth edition of the annual congress Physics@FOM Veldhoven. Nearly 1800 physicists from throughout the Netherlands will come together to discuss the latest issues in physics, to network and to gain inspiration. This is the ideal opportunity for you to gain a quick overview of the latest developments in Dutch physics research!
In addition to top Dutch researchers, three renowned foreign physicists have been invited as speakers. Prof.dr. Charles Kane will start Tuesday's proceedings with a lecture about topological insulators, materials that both insulate and conduct. Prof.dr. Alain Aspect will give the after-dinner lecture on Tuesday. His famous 'Bell test experiments' revealed that two entangled quantum events seem to influence each other even over a large distance and without a clear communication mechanism between the two. Prof.dr. Juan Maldacena will conclude the congress on Wednesday with a presentation on the quantum mechanics underlying black holes.
Before Tuesday's after-dinner lecture by Alain Aspect, the four FOM Prizes will be presented. Prof.dr. Pieter Kruit will receive the FOM Valorisation Prize 2011, Dr. Silke Diedenhofen the FOM Valorisation Chapter Prize 2011, Dr. Klaas-Jan Tielrooij the FOM Physics Thesis Prize 2011 and Prof.dr. Maria Antonietta Loi the Minerva Prize 2011. The prize winners will present their research during a separate session on Wednesday.
Registration
The press is cordially invited to attend Physics@FOM Veldhoven 2012. You can register by sending an email to veldhoven@fom.nl with your name and organisation. If you would like to interview one of the foreign speakers then please let us know. We will then try to arrange an appointment with the speaker in a quiet room. The two-day congress Physics@FOM Veldhoven has now grown into the biggest congress for all scientists within Dutch physics: almost 1800 physicists will take part in 12 focus sessions and 18 parallel sessions (203 lectures) as well as a network lunch for industry and science. A total of 421 posters will be presented and on the evening before the congress four master classes will be given to 100 PhD students. The congress will be held in English.
