Nanocrystals

Left: a completely isolated nanocrystal is studied using an electron beam (EELS) to determine its bandgap energy. Right: a nanocrystal of the same size surrounded by neighbors is similarly probed, for which the measured bandgap energy is different. Hence, there must be a coupling between adjacent nanocrystals in order for them to 'average' their bandgap energys.
